Air Plants 101 with Guest Speaker, Todd Portner

Air Plants 101 with Guest Speaker, Todd Portner

At 44 years old, Todd had killed every single plant that he ever had. Not because he didn’t try to care for them- he just didn’t have a green thumb. For years he had admired a friend’s plant she had hanging in her kitchen window; an ‘Air Plant’ she called it. He was fascinated with how delicate and simple it was: no roots, no water, no dirt. He began researching them, and eventually bought his first Air Plant. That was in March of 2018- and since then- he has expanded his collection to over 30 plants in 17 different varieties. Some of them have “pups” too! Todd is a lover of mid-century furniture and decor, so air plants are perfect for his home, where the risk of plant damage is unacceptable. He can display them without risk of drips, water marks, or spills. If you love air plants, want to learn how to better care for them, or are looking to expand your collection- please join us Saturday, November 10th at 1:00pm for Todd’s presentation. We will have a wide variety of air plants and accessories available for purchase.

Planting for Pollinators

On October 13th, from 10:00 am until Noon, David Muns, a Frederick County Master Gardener and beekeeper, will be presenting a program on the importance of pollinators in our landscape. He will explain how YOU can help save our pollinators - honey bees, native bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds - by planting a pollinator friendly garden.  David has planted over 100 varieties of self-seeding annuals and perennials in his pollinator garden at the Frederick News-Post, where he keeps his honey bees.  He will also provide a teaser on honey bees: the most proficient pollinator of them all.

A number of perennials will be available so that you can begin your own pollinator friendly garden- and perhaps, become certified in the new Frederick County Pollinator Friendly Garden Certification program.  Preparation, planting, and maintenance for the garden will also be discussed.

Bee a part of the solution: Planting for Pollinators

  • Frederick News Post Community Gardens (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Fall is a great time to plant perennials for some garden beauty next spring. Mar-Lu View Nursery will be sponsoring a pollinator event & plant sale on September 22nd from 10:00am-Noon at the Frederick News Post Community Gardens, located at 351 Ballenger Center Drive in Frederick. Whether you are just starting your pollinator garden, or adding to it, this event will serve as a great resource to those looking to gather both information and materials.

Master Gardener and FNP Community Garden Designer, David Muns will be educating those in attendance on the value of building a pollinator garden. The recently certified pollinator gardens at the Frederick News Post contain over 100 varieties of pollen-and-nectar-providing plants. This demo garden will show you the color, size, and bloom span to help you determine the plants that best suit your garden. After his presentation, staff from the nursery will be on-site with a variety of pollinator-friendly perennials available for purchase. Fun Fact: the gardens are also certified as a Monarch Waystation! There are several colonies of honey bees in the apiary near the pollinator gardens, but don’t worry, you will be safe.

Directions: Turn onto Ballenger Center Drive off of Ballenger Creek Pike to the FNP Building at 351 Ballenger Center Drive. Turn left onto Carrier Lane, past the FNP Community Garden, and park in the lot to the east of the community garden.

You may also want to check out the Frederick County Beekeepers' Association pollinator displays and the Frederick County Master Gardener displays in building 14A, at the Great Frederick Fair the week of September 14th-22nd.
